Life in a Fenland Community: Thorney Village

Modern Thorney

*Historic Thorney

Thorney village has a vibrant social life, with clubs ranging from Dragon Taekwondo to Lace-making. A list of these, with contact details, may be found on thorney.org/clubs.htm.

The Thorney Society, thorney-museum.org.uk, opened a museum in 1987. Through a series of exhibits it illustrates the history of the village from the 6th century to the present day. The Society runs tours of the village and offers a family history service using records dating from the mid 17th century.

The greatest issue facing Thorney today is the Bypass. It has been calculated that there are, currently, 16000 – 20000 traffic movements through the village each day, 19% of which are heavy goods vehicles.

The campaign has lasted over 70 years, and is now finally coming to fruition. Unfortunately, the surviving local shops will be threatened by a huge reduction in passing trade. Most residents believe, however, that the threat of traffic to the health and safety of the villagers, and to the preservation of the buildings, far outweighs this risk.

More information about the Bypass may be found on malcmoss.easynet.co.uk/speeches/thorneybypass.htm
